Preparing For a Good Shave

For a really close shave with minimum irritation, preparation is the key area to focus on.

Firstly, you should exfoliate your face to remove dead cells, lift up the hairs and smooth the skin underneath. Use a good quality scrub for men as these lend themselves perfectly to shaving. Then apply hot water to your face using a face cloth or small towel. Ideally, you should shave in the shower as the steam keeps the pores open, the hairs lifted and your shaving product wet.

If you have a goatee beard or sharp sideburns, then a shaving oil or clear gel allows you to see what youre doing. Otherwise use a quality shaving cream and really work it in to the area for at least one minute with a good quality shaving brush soaked with hot water.

Its important to follow the direction of the hair with your razor and stretch the skin, taking extra care not to shave against the direction of growth on your neck and Adams apple. Rinse and repeat for the closest shave. Shaving against the grain can lead to ingrown hairs and a shaving rash and should only be performed when absolutely necessary.

When youve finished, pat your face dry and apply a good light moisturiser. This will re-hydrate, reduce redness and improve the appearance of your skin.

For guys who currently have shaving inflammation on their face or neck, allow yourself a few days without shaving before using the technique above. This will allow your skin to settle down and will normally clear the condition up.
